From the Commander
Welcome to the 994th MED DET (VS) (Medical Detachment (Veterinary Services)).
The 994th is one of only 12 such units in the Army Reserve. The unit is based in Round Rock, Texas. Our facility is just north of Austin, less than an hour from Fort Hood and approximately one and one-half hours from Fort Sam Houston.
The mission of the 994th is focused on animal medicine and food safety. US Army Veterinary Services (VS) is designated as the executive agent for food safety and animal medicine for all military branches. To provide these services, the 994th utilizes veterinarians (64 series A-F), animal care specialists (68T) and food inspection specialists (68R). Additionally, we utilize Soldiers specialized in wheeled-vehicle and generator mechanics, human resources, information systems, supply, food services, medical services and more to accomplish the wide variety of missions we are called to undertake.
The 994th has a rich history full of deployment support to combat and non-combat areas around the world. Soldiers from our unit have deployed to Afghanistan, Kuwait, Qatar, Oman, Seychelles, Djibouti, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain in support of combat operations. Also, the 994th has consistently supported humanitarian missions throughout the Caribbean, Middle America, South America, Africa, and the Pacific focused on providing medical care to the farm animals of local villages lacking veterinary services as well as training in food safety and sanitation.
The 994th strives to be the “go to” unit for overseas veterinary missions and crisis response within the continental United States and around the world.
We welcome you to our Unit and look forward to serving with you.
